The BEST Career Advice I Ever Got
I grew up poor.
And as many poor kids think, I never wanted to be poor again. America continues to be the land of opportunity. Get educated, work hard and achieve success. The road is not easy but it is open and real.
So, I picked Chemical Engineering as a path to that success, not only because my I saw my older brother be successful in that field and not because I “got” chemistry, but because in the early ‘80’s it was the highest earning starting salary for any four-year degree.
With that, I got a good start and secured my first real, good-paying job as an Industrial Marketing Engineer at Columbia Gas. I moved to upstate NY and started working hard, making things happen.
Then what?
Well, I was fortunate to be the baby of the family, and have older siblings who were well on their way to be successful. What did they do? How did they advance?
On a beautiful hot July morning while sitting on the deck of my sister’s beachfront home in Oceanport, NJ, I asked my also successful brother-in-law, the question, What’s Next, how do I get ahead?
His response was: Figure out what your desired next job is up the ladder and focus on what it takes to get there. Voice your interest in achieving that advancement and seek out help to make it happen. Then do it all over again.
Great advice — the BEST I ever got! It helped me achieve the wealth and career success that I only dreamed of as a small poor boy.
